Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials is Finally Launched (January 21) - Simplified to Inauguration, Signboard Hanging and Opening Ceremony in Light of Covid-19 Pandemic -

□ After 25 years of continuous pursuit, the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (hereinafter the “CIO”, Chief Prosecutor: Kim Jin-wook) was finally launched today on (Jan. 21), in order to create a just nation without corruption.
○ Since the anti-corruption bill was brought before the 15th National Assembly in 1996, the CIO legislation was passed by the 20th National Assembly at the end of 2019 after numerous discussions.
○ The CIO subsequently went through the 21st National Assembly’s procedures for recommendation of nominees for Director-General of the CIO and presidential appointment and finally made its historic first step today.
□ Although it would have been more proper to celebrate the launch of the CIO with fellow citizens, due to the seriousness of the Covid-19 pandemic, the celebration was condensed to a simple inauguration, signboard hanging, and opening ceremony.
○ The inauguration of Kim Jin-wook as first Director-General of the CIO was held on January 21 (Thurs) in the 2F conference room of Building 5 of the Government Complex Gwacheon with only a few officials in attendance.
- Chief Prosecutor Kim Jin-wook stated during the inauguration that he would strive to gain the trust of the citizens, together with his colleagues, for successful settlement of the CIO in the constitutional system of Korea.
- He also announced his plan to lead the CIO on three principles for the purpose of creating a『Human Rights-Compliant Investigation Organization Trusted by Citizens』.
□ Meanwhile, after the inauguration, Chief Prosecutor Kim Jin-wook held a signboard hanging and opening ceremony in the presence of Yun Ho-jung, chairman of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee of the National Assembly, Choo Mi-ae, Minister of Justice, and Nam Gi-myeong, head of the Preparatory Group of the CIO, who made great contributions to the launch of the CIO.
